Teenage depression is a very disturbing reality affecting younger and younger adolescents and teenagers. Two decades ago, depression in children was almost unknown. Now the fastest rate of increase in depression is among teenagers. Due to this, researchers believe that changes in society, like healthy goals, responsibility, family and friend connections and meaning in life are not automatically met. Teens are exposed to a constant load of images showing how we are meant to look, sound and be, and told that this is important in life. Meaning in life is attached to what they have, or look like, rather than what they do, or achieve. During these years, pressure from peers to fit in, can be very strong. If children feel different or inadequate then depression may set in, depending on how they deal with it.

Treatment for Depression comes in many forms

Treatment for depression comes in many forms with a combination of medications and psychological counseling being very effective for most teens. Talk therapy or counseling teaches teenagers and their families to understand themselves and the nature of depression. It teaches depressed teens how to deal with low energy, engage in productive behaviors, manage relationships and to develop effective problem solving strategies. In some teens, depression is so severe that an out of home stay is needed, especially if your child is in danger of self-harm, suicide or hurting someone else. Treatment of depression decreases the risk of suicide, but does not eliminate the risk. Therefore, getting psychotherapy at a residential treatment center for troubled teens or a therapeutic boarding school can help keep your child calm and safe until they learn the tools to manage their symptoms.

Parents who are concerned that their child is considering suicide due to severe depression, should seek care as soon as possible.
